Hilton E. Jones Gordon
"SAPPHIRE INSPIRATION"
Meet Hilton E. Jones Gordon—a woman whose life story is filled with faith, family, adventure, service, and more than a few unforgettable moments!
Hilton was born in Folkville, Mississippi, to Jim and Gladys Jones. From those early Mississippi roots, she began a journey that would take her through education, marriage, motherhood, a remarkable career, community service, travel, and some truly special experiences.
After graduating from Sherman Hill High School in 1958, Hilton headed off to Piney Woods Junior College, where she earned her associate degree in education in 1960. But Hilton's college experience was about much more than books and classrooms. She was also a proud member of the Piney Woods Cotton Blossom Singers. Every Saturday morning at 6:00 a.m., the group performed live on a local Jackson radio station. Talk about an early start! Those Saturday mornings became some of Hilton's most treasured college memories.
And Piney Woods brought another wonderful surprise—love! While pursuing her education, Hilton met her future husband, Jesse J. (Haywood) Gordon. After graduating from Piney Woods in 1960, she continued her education at Jackson State College from 1960 to 1961. During that time, she even had the opportunity to attend a couple of classes with James Meredith, making her college years even more memorable.
Then came a major new chapter. In 1960, Hilton moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi, and on Christmas Day—December 25, 1960—she married the love of her life, Jesse J. (Haywood) Gordon. What a Christmas gift! Together, they built a beautiful family and were blessed with four children: Robyn, Michael, Dwyane, and James.
In 1962, Hilton began her career in Vicksburg at Mercy Hospital, which later became associated with Parkview and River Regional Medical Center. She started out working in the cafeteria, but Hilton was just getting started. She went on to become a licensed/certified nursing assistant and continued advancing throughout her career. Eventually, she served as an OB/GYN unit secretary. After an incredible 50 years of dedicated service, Hilton officially retired in 2012.
But retirement did not mean slowing down! Hilton has always had a heart for people and service. Throughout her life, she has been active in her community and involved with organizations including Daughters of the King, the YMCA, AARP, Wisdom in Grace, and the Nurses of Mercy Hospital group. Through these organizations, she has served others, made lifelong friendships, and stayed connected to the people and community she loves.
And then there was the traveling! Hilton has been blessed to travel both across the United States and internationally, collecting memories and stories along the way. Still, two experiences stand out as especially unforgettable.
On January 20, 2009, Hilton was there in person for the inauguration of President Barack Obama. Being part of such a historic moment was an experience she will always treasure.
Then came another unforgettable milestone—her 85th birthday! Hilton celebrated this special occasion surrounded by family and loved ones on the Today Show. What better way to celebrate 85 amazing years than with the people she loves and a little national television excitement?
When Hilton looks back on her life, she sees a journey filled with blessings. From her childhood in Folkville to her school days, her years at Piney Woods and Jackson State, her marriage and four children, her 50-year career, community service, travels, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, every chapter has added something special to her story.
At the heart of it all is Hilton's faith and gratitude. She gives thanks to God for every blessing, every person who has shared her journey, and every memory she continues to cherish.
Hilton's story is more than a biography—it is a celebration of a life well lived. It is a story of faith, family, education, love, service, perseverance, adventure, and plenty of reasons to smile. And after all these years, Hilton's journey continues to be one worth celebrating!
